托福阅读单词是基础，那么遇到生词怎么办？首先要明确的是，托福考试中，单词有哪几类？

我们所说的单词，大范围来划分的话，可以分为高频词，逻辑词，以及学科词。高频词就是我们说的常考词汇，不是生僻词，多是常出现的常规单词；逻辑词则需要分态度词和逻辑词了，比如表示积极态度的词，如luckily,fortunately等，逻辑词，如：but ,and,however等，学科词主要是针对四大学科的单词，一般冲阅读高分的话，比如冲28-29以上等，建议可以花时间熟识学科词。所以，在平时积累单词的时候我们可以按此分类进行，掌握好单词。

针对一个需要备考托福的学生而言，8000的词汇量是基本的，那么，如果在考试中遇到生词，怎么办呢？

单词构成句子，句子构成段落，段落构成篇章，所以，最基本的构成句子中心意思的词要认识，即使不认识，也没关系，知道其啥词性，比如做主语的一般是n，根据上下文语义来推断词语意思。那在托福考试中，最典型的以单词为考察对象的，就是词汇题了，我们可以根据以下方法来处理生词。

如：

1、有and,or 等连接的单词。

I think the book is very interesting and humorous.

那可以猜测and连接的两个单词interesting 和humorous应该是同样感情色彩的词。

以下是托福试题例子。

栗子：

In winter the heat produced by a city can equal or surpass the amount of heat available from the Sun. All the heat that warms a building eventually transfers to the surrounding air, a process that is quickest where houses are poorly insulated. But an automobile produces enough heat to warm an average house in winter, and if a house were perfectly insulated, one adult could also produce more than enough heat to warm it. Therefore, even without any industrial production of heat, an urban area tends to be warmer than the countryside that surrounds it.

The word “surpass ” in the paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to

A. remain below.

B. be higher than.

C. add to.

D. come close to.

根据单词or，可以猜测or之后的词应该有别于equal，则要么是高于，要么是低于，根据此可以先排除选项C,D

再根据后文内容信息，可以推断选项B为正确答案。

此题还可以根据词根词缀来猜测，这个前提是，学生必须有一定的词根词缀积累，所以，学生们也不妨可以积累下常见词根词缀极其表达意思。

如在此题中，sur-表示超过，在上面，pass也是通过，那综合意思也可以选出正确答案。

常见的词根词缀如：

表示“否定”前缀：dis-, un-,

表示“共同，相同”前缀：sym-,syn-

表示“反对”前缀：anti

表示“分开，分离”前缀：dis

表示“超过”前缀：extra-.sur-

表示“重复”前缀：re-

......

词根词缀众多，考生们可以在平时有空余时间或者被单词时候多积累。

2、遇到生词可以看解释

通常在考试中，会有相关的同位语或者定语从句，再者，类似的还有下定义式的细节，都可以根据此来判断意思，进行理解。

栗子1：

如：Gigantothermy (sometimes called ectothermic homeothermy or inertial homeothermy) is a phenomenon with significance in biology and paleontology, whereby large, bulky ectothermic animals are more easily able to maintain a constant, relatively high body.

Gigantothermy 不认识没关系，这是典型的A IS B形式，所以，B的内容就是对A的解释，从后面内容我们可以大概了解意思是巨温性。

栗子2：

Even though Clovis points, spear points with longitudinal grooves chipped onto their faces, have been found all over North America, they are named for the New Mexico site where they were first discovered in 1932.

spear points with longitudinal grooves chipped onto their faces就是一个同位解释前面N，Clovis points，根据同位解释的内容我们可以知道他是某种长矛。

所以，托福考试中，遇到生词不用太过焦虑，也不用花太多时间纠结，只要不影响大概意思理解，可以直接跳过，同时，也可以根据上下文语境和常规猜词法猜词。另外，老师要提醒下大家，当在考试中文章后有单词意思注释的，注意这里托福考官肯定设置了考点，比如托福TPO2中的the origins of cetaceans中的例题1。
